Harding struck for two runs in the eighth and added three runs in the ninth to record a 5-0 victory over the University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team on Sunday night in the winner’s bracket of the Great American Conference Championship Tournament.
The Weevils (34-14) were held to only two runners in scoring position situations in the loss. Senior Ben Agredano laced a double to the left-center gap in the top of the first, but was left at third after a pair of groundouts ended the frame. Senior D’Marco Poindexter drew a two-out walk in the fifth and stole second for UAM’s final true scoring threat.
The Bisons (28-22) took advantage of a UAM error, a walk and a hit batter to break the scoreless tie in the bottom of the seventh. Harding finalized the scoring with three runs off three hits an inning later.
Harding’s Collin Campbell (9-2) earned the win after keeping UAM scoreless off just four hits with six strikeouts and one walk in the first seven innings. Andrew Fiddler registered his third save of the season after allowing just one UAM hit in the final two innings.
Sophomore Zach McKnight (4-4) took the loss for UAM after giving up two runs (one earned) off five hits in the first 6.2 innings.
The Weevils will need to record two victories on Monday to remain alive in the GAC Tournament, starting with a noon game against Ouachita Baptist. A win over OBU pits the Weevils against Harding again at 7 p.m.
