uamThe University of Arkansas at Monticello football team was defeated by Southeastern Oklahoma, 44-26, in a Saturday afternoon game on the road.

Arkansas-Monticello (4-6, 4-6 GAC) found itself locked in a back-and-forth scoring battle against the Savage Storm (6-4, 6-4 GAC) throughout the opening half, with UAM holding its only lead of the contest during the second quarter after Cole Sears connected with Trevon Smith for a 77 yard passing score.

Despite two rushing touchdowns by the Weevils in the second half, the Savage Storm controlled the final half and sealed the game late in the fourth quarter on another rushing touchdown.

Final team statistics on the day saw UAM with 510 total yards compared to the 516 total of SOSU. Arkansas-Monticello led the game in overall passing yards behind Cole Sears’ 355 yards, but Southeastern led the match-up in total rushing yards with 304.

“SOSU is a good football team, we knew we could not make mistakes and had a chance,” UAM head coach Hud Jackson said after the game. “We played to a lead in the first half, but couldn’t capitalize on some chances. We have to get over it and get ready for our trophy game (Battle of the Timberlands). SAU is a good team and we have to be ready.”

Leading UAM offensively were junior wide-receivers Trevon Smith and Jalen Tolliver. Smith totaled 141 yards on five catches and hauled in one touchdown. Tolliver finished the game with 117 yards and added a game-high seven catches.

Imani Riley led UAM’s rushing game with nine carries for 50 yards and two rushing touchdowns. Deountario Brown also crossed the goal-line on the ground once and added 37 rushing yards to the offensive effort.

Defensively UAM was led by junior Ja’lon Watts with 11 total tackles in the game, and one sack. Wesley Williams totaled nine tackles in the contest as well.

The Weevils will be back in action on Saturday, November 12 as UAM will host the Muleriders of Southern Arkansas in the Battle of the Timberlands trophy game on senior day in the final contest of 2016. Kick-off scheduled for 3 p.m. at Convoy Leslie Cotton Boll Stadium.
