The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team picked up its second straight victory over a nationally-ranked team with a 4-2 win over No. 19 Central Missouri on Monday afternoon at Minute Maid Park.
With UAM (3-0) leading 4-1 after three innings, both teams were held scoreless in the next four complete innings before UCM (1-2) rallied in the eighth to get three runners on, but only managed one run on an double from Barrett Noirfalise just before the Mules loaded the bases on a pair of walks.
Junior designated hitter Austin Braddock opened the scoring with a solo homerun to left field in the top of the first inning. The Weevils added three more in the second, highlighted by a two-run double by senior D’Marco Poindexter, his first hit of the 2014 season.
Poindexter moved to third and sophomore Evan Comeau crossed the plate from third base in the next at bat on a wild pitch from UCM starter Kurtis Schuyler to give UAM a 4-0 lead.
The Mules got on the board in the bottom of the third with an RBI single from Kevin Gratza.
Senior Kade Garlington (1-0) earned the win, allowing one run off three hits with four strikeouts and three walks in the first six innings. Junior Jeff Harvill picked up the save after getting the Weevils out of a bases loaded jam in the eighth and keeping UCM off the board in the ninth as well.
Kurtis Schuyler (0-1) took the loss for the Mules after giving up four runs off five hits with six strikeouts and one walk in the first 5.1 innings.
UAM finished the game with a 7-6 margin in hits. Sophomore Corey Wood and senior Alex Lang led UAM with two hits each.
The Weevils close out their participation in the Houston Winter Invitational on Tuesday against Great American Conference member Henderson State. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. at Minute Maid Park.
