The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team improved its win streak to five on Tuesday by topping Delta State in a non-conference game.

The Weevils tallied double-digit hits for the fourth consecutive game to ultimately hold off the Statesmen for an 8-7 victory at Weevils Field.

UAM improves to 15-14 overall on the season while DSU drops 21-12 on the year.

Connor Wilkerson got the start for the Weevils on the mound and showed off his ability to get out a jam early as he worked around back-to-back singles to begin the game retiring the next three hitters to leave the pair stranded.

The Weevils threatened to score in the bottom of the first, but came up empty.

In the next frame UAM capitalized with runners on base as Trey Forsythe drove home the first run with an RBI-double down the left field line. Two batters later Cole Muckleroy worked a bases loaded walk to bring home the second run in the inning.

Wilkerson continued to hold DSU scoreless through the first four innings of the contest before surrendering one run in the fifth. The Hermitage, Arkansas product kept the Weevils in front by retiring two in a row to strand the tying run in scoring position.

UAM responded in the bottom half of the inning when Jordan Johnson launched his fifth home run in four games sending a two-run blast beyond the left field fence. Hudson Hopkins added another run for the Weevils with an RBI-double down the left field line to put UAM up 5-1.

Trent Bunting took over for the Weevils out of the bullpen to start the sixth and allowed the Statesmen to cut UAM’s lead to 5-3.

The Weevils turned to the bullpen again in the seventh as Jared Roberts took over on the bump. The lefty retired the first hitter he faced, but then struggled to record another out. DSU plated one run on a bases loaded single, but the second out of the inning came at the plate as UAM caught the runner trying to score from second. Colby Adkins came in to relieve Roberts and gave up a two-run double to the first batter he faced before recording the final out of the frame with the Weevils now trailing 6-5.

In the bottom of the inning UAM jumped back in front when Aaron Gaela launched a three-run blast to center field.

DSU led off the ninth with a solo home run and a double prompting the Weevils to bring in Ojani Chacon to replace Adkins on the mound. With the tying run on second base Chacon struck out three straight hitters to close out the 8-7 win for UAM.

Johnson and Gaela led the Weevils at the plate collecting two hits apiece and each adding a home run.

Adkins (W, 2-2) picked up the win dealing 1.1 innings in relief while allowing one run on three hits.

Chacon (S, 3) earned the save by stranding the tying run on second in the ninth with three consecutive strikeouts.

Wilkerson pitched 5.0 innings and struck out five while allowing one run on five hits in the start.

Bunting worked 2.0 frames giving up two runs, one earned, on two hits while Roberts surrendered three runs on two hits while recording just two outs.

Evan Bynum (L, 0-2) took the loss for DSU giving up three runs on three hits in 1.2 innings pitched.
