The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team rallied for three runs in the seventh and one run in the eighth to earn a 5-1 non-conference victory over Ouachita Baptist on Wednesday at home.
The Weevils (23-11) opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning with a two-out RBI single from senior Nick Cerda. The Weevils did not score again until the seventh inning, but had plenty of chances, finishing with a total of 12 runners left on base.
A pair of RBI doubles down the left field line sparked the Weevil offense in the bottom of the seventh inning. Senior Travis Steinke started the rally with a line drive down the line to score Cerda from first base. Junior Alex Smith followed up two batters later with a double that just stayed fair over the bag at third base to score Steinke.
Junior Nick Piraino capped the three-run seventh with an RBI sacrifice fly.
UAM’s final cushion came in the bottom of the eighth on a solo homerun from senior Corey Wood that cleared the scoreboard in right center. It was Wood’s 13th homerun of the season, moving him to one away of tying the school record for a single season set by Jamie Tucker in 1999.
After a quality start and a no-decision for junior Kris Brown, only giving up one run on two hits, senior Ben Aldridge (3-1) earned the win in relief. Aldridge kept the Tigers scoreless and hitless in the sixth and seventh innings with two strikeouts. Senior Chad Bradford and sophomore Landon McFadden held the lead with scoreless relief efforts in the eighth and ninth innings, respectively.
Ouachita’s lone run can on a sac fly from Justin Weigle in the top of the sixth inning to force a 1-all tie. The Tigers (11-26) were limited to just three hits in the game.
UAM finished with 10 hits, led by two hits each from Smith and senior Evan Comeau.
The Weevils close a seven-game home stand this Friday and Saturday in a three-game GAC series against East Central. More information about that series will be released on Thursday.
