The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team picked up a doubleheader split against Ouachita Baptist Sunday to salvage one game in the series. An offensive outburst led the Weevils to a 17-3 victory in the first contest of the twin bill, but UAM was unable to hold onto an early lead in game two falling 5-3 at Weevils Field.
UAM moves to 10-14 overall and 10-11 in Great American Conference play while OBU goes to 9-19 on the season and 5-16 in league contests.
Game One: UAM 17, Ouachita Baptist University 3
After a scoreless first inning, UAM starter River Hunt allowed the OBU on the board in the second scoring two runs on one hit in the frame.
The Weevils responded in the home half of the inning in a big way. Dylan Borman stroked a leadoff double before Hudson Hopkins brought him home with an RBI-single. Two hitters later Audy Clary sent a single through the middle to score Hopkins. Nick Fakouri then put UAM in the lead scoring on a wild pitch. Still with no one out in the inning the Weevils loaded the bases for Cade Thompson who sent a two-run double into left field. Andrew Piraino brought home another run with sacrifice fly to score Cole Muckleroy and Thompson scored quickly after crossing the plate on a wild pitch. In his second at bat of the frame, Borman capped the nine-run inning for the Weevils with a two-run home run to center field.
UAM tacked on another run in the third on an RBI-double by Grant Shepherd pushing the lead out to 10-2.
Hunt settled in to hold the Tigers scoreless in the third and fourth innings, but gave up a solo shot in the fifth for what would be the last run of the contest for OBU.
Piraino added a run for the Weevils in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI-double to score Muckleroy.
In the home half of the sixth, UAM put the game away scoring six more runs in the frame. Shepherd and Muckleroy worked back-to-back bases loaded walks to open the scoring in the frame before Thompson and Piraino hit back-to-back two run doubles to put the Weevils up by 14.
Connor Wilkerson took over in relief for Hunt in the top of the seventh to close out the contest giving UAM the 17-3 victory.
Eight different Weevils registered at least one hit and scored at least one run. Borman led the way going a perfect 4-for-4 with a home run, two runs driven in and three runs scored. Thompson and Piraino each collected four RBI in the win as well.
Hunt (W, 6-0) picked up the win allowing three runs in 6.0 innings while striking out seven.
Wilkerson pitched 1.0 scoreless inning to close the game in the seventh inning.
Garrett Hermes (L, 1-4) took the loss giving up seven runs on six hits after not recording an out in the second inning of his start.
Game Two: Ouachita Baptist 5, UAM 3
The Weevils carried the offensive momentum into the start of the second game of the day as Thompson led off the bottom of the first with a home run to right center. Hopkins added another run with an RBI-single before Borman scampered home on a wild pitch to put UAM up 3-0 after one inning.
After working a 1-2-3 first frame, Colby Adkins allowed OBU to get a run across in the second on two hits.
The Tigers added two more against Adkins in the third to tie the game 3-3.
OBU struck once again in the fifth to take the lead on a two-run home run to make the score 5-3.
In the bottom of the frame UAM loaded the bases with no outs, but left them loaded to head to the sixth with a two-run deficit.
Jared Roberts worked a scoreless sixth and seventh out of the bullpen to keep the Weevils in striking distance, but UAM was unable to muster a comeback falling 5-3 in the series finale.
Adkins (L, 1-2) ended with the loss surrendering five runs on six hits in 5.0 innings pitched while striking out nine.
Roberts picked up three strikeouts in 2.0 innings of relief for the Weevils.
Cooper Timmons (W, 3-2) collected the win allowing three runs on six hits across 7.0 innings on the mound.
UAM travels to Texas for a non-conference midweek matchup against UT-Tyler Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
