Winnie Mae Powell

Winnie Mae Powell of the Glendale community went to her forever home on September 25, 2021. She was met by her Heavenly Father who made possible the reunion with her late husband, Danny Andrew Powell who left this world on October 29, 2011. She was also reunited with their daughter, Kimberly Fay Powell Lutrell, who left this world on October 15, 2019.

Mrs. Powell was born at Davis Hospital in Pine Bluff on March 4, 1943. She was the daughter of the late Wesley and Fay Harper of the Feeneyville community. She attended school at Draughan Business School until she met the love of her life. Being a wife and mother to five children was more important to her than a formal education. They were married on March 19, 1962. Mrs. Powell was a dedicated wife and mother to their five children, four of which are still living, Danna Sue Powell, John Wesley Powell (Tammy), Janice Lynn Copeland (Brian) and Michael Andrew Powell (Michelle), all of Star City.

She was the “good woman” behind a good man and supported his dreams and hard work by helping operate their grocery store, Hometown Grocery in Star City, and later Hometown Grocery in Rison for several years. They also opened and ran a restaurant in Rison, Nascar Dan’s, as well as a florist shop.

She was a loving “Maw” to her first grandson, Leslie Andrew (Drew) Powell and great-grandson, Christian Andrew Powell, who she helped raise until her last breath. She was “Maw” to her other eight grandchildren, Johnna Kay Morris, Clayton Copeland, Maebree Greene, Hannah Ashcraft, Austin Powell, Grayce Powell, Alex Powell, and Allie Powell. Maw had six great-granddaughters, Myia Morris, Dallas Morris, Maelei Greene, Addyson Morris, Brynlea Greene and Caroline Ashcraft. She had two other great-grandsons, Zane Morris and Case Ashcraft.

Mrs. Powell’s house was home to many children and some adults and many mouths were fed by her good home cooking. She loved her family beyond measure and family was what she loved most next to her Lord and Savior. Mrs. Powell was a member of Shady Grove Missionary Baptist Church of Glendale.

Mrs. Powell is also survived by two sisters, Brenda Weeks and Betty O’Bryant. She had one brother, Curtis Harper, who preceded her in death.

Mrs. Powell leaves behind many close family members including a host of nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews and many dear friends.

The funeral service will be held Wednesday, September 29, at 1 p.m. at Shady Grove Missionary Baptist Church. Brother (son) Michael Powell will officiate the service. The burial will be at Shady Grove Cemetery following the service.

Pallbearers, at her request, will be her grandsons, Drew Powell, Clayton Copeland, Austin Powell, Alex Powell; great-grandson, Christian Powell; her two nephews, Tommy Weeks and Mark Woodruff; and her sons-in-law, Brian Copeland and Jeff Lutrell. Honorary pallbearers will be John Woodruff, Leslie Weeks, Johnny Wayne Powell, Rick Scism, Steve Blasengame, Chris Reed and Glen Bennett and Johnnie Mae King.
