The historic Wood Avenue Presbyterian Church in Monticello will focus on the necessity for music in worship on October 12 at its regular 11 a.m. worship service.
The Chancel Choir will present a concert of sacred music, and a short meditation, entitled “Singing and Serving God,” will be drawn from Psalm 100: 1-2.
The choir’s selections will reflect classical, contemporary, and Southern gospel traditions. Selections in the classical mode will include arrangements of “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross,” “In the Cross of Christ I Glory,” and “Just as I Am.”
The choir will present contemporary such contemporary pieces as “His Name Is Wonderful,” “All We Like Sheep Have Gone Astray,” and a musical setting of Isaiah 49. Mosie Lister’s “Goodby, World, Goodby” and “Then I Met the Master” represent Southern gospel. A special feature of the program will be solos by soprano Colleen Handly.
James Cathey, organist and music director, and the Chancel Choir invite the public to this time of worship and reflection.
The church is located at the corner of W. Wood and Church Street in Monticello.
