Senior right fielder Corey Wood hit a grand slam homerun in the top of the eighth inning, his second homerun of the game, to lead the University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team to a 6-2 road victory over Arkansas Tech on Saturday in the first half of a Great American Conference double-header split.

The Weevils lost the second game 8-1, but the win in the first game gave the Weevils (22-8, 14-4 GAC) their sixth conference series win of the year in as many tries.

Tech (15-21, 8-13 GAC) opened the scoring in the first game with two runs in the first inning, while the Weevils left the bases loaded in each of the second and third innings.

Wood put the Weevils on the board with a leadoff homerun in the top of the fifth inning to cut the deficit in half at 2-1. A double-steal in the sixth forced a 2-all tie. Senior shortstop Evan Comeau stole second, and senior C.J. Womack stole home.

Wood’s go-ahead grand slam in the eighth came with two outs. It was his 12th homerun of the season, inching him closer to the school record for a single season, which was set by Jamie Tucker in 1999 with 14.

Sophomore Braden Chambers (7-0) kept his unbeaten record intact after allowing two runs off five hits with nine strikeouts and four walks in the first eight innings. Senior Ben Aldridge kept the Wonder Boys scoreless in the ninth in a no-save situation with UAM up by four.

In the second game, Tech used a seven-run second inning to avoid the sweep, highlighted by a grand slam homerun from Josh Watkins. The Wonder Boys added another run in the third to finalize their scoring.

Senior Gavin Johnston came in out of the bullpen in the fourth and allowed only two base runners in the final three innings.

UAM’s lone run came on a leadoff homerun from sophomore center fielder Brian Ray in the top of the fourth inning. UAM totaled nine hits in the loss, led by two hits each from Comeau, Ray and senior left fielder Kevin Fitzpatrick.

The Weevils open a seven-game home stand next weekend in a three-game GAC series against Harding. More information about that series will be released later in the week.
